About 12 years ago (early in my DJ career), I had a Bride named Jennifer that changed everything. When she spoke to me about being her DJ, she said one thing that stuck with me forever. “I actually can’t stand going to weddings. They’re all the same.” Wow. That opened my eyes. How many Brides (and Grooms) feel that weddings are all the same? Let’s face it: “The same” equals boring.
Jennifer was afraid her wedding would be just like all the others she ever attended. And I realized something, too. At that point in my career, 12 years ago, all my receptions were pretty much the same. Talk about having your eyes opened!
So, what to do about it? I promised Jennifer that we would work hard to make her special day, well, special. That it would be better than all those past receptions. Most importantly, it would be the night of her life, and a complete blast for her guests, as well.
So how did it turn out? Pretty good… but not great. But it was the starting point for something amazing. The good news is, it made me realize what separates a good DJ from an exceptional DJ.
